Welcome Back, Bulldogs!

The wait is almost over!

KSD Back to School Open Houses are happening today, Thursday, Aug. 20, giving students and families a chance to visit their schools, meet teachers and staff members, and get ready for a great year ahead.

Then, on Tuesday, Aug. 25, we officially kick off the 2026-2027 school year with the first day of classes!

We are excited to welcome our Bulldog Family back into our schools and begin another year of learning, growth and connection.

We’ll see you at the Open Houses tonight, and we can’t wait to welcome our students back on Tuesday!

KSD Board of Education Meeting Recap (Aug. 19, 2026)

The KSD Board of Education met Wednesday evening, with much of the discussion focused on school facilities, continued progress on the 2022 bond projects and planning for future needs.

Board members received updates on the City of Kearney’s 19th Street Complete Street Project, comprehensive facility assessments for all eight KSD instructional buildings and the 2022 bond program, which is now about 90% complete based on projected expenditures.

The Board also approved several agreements related to future facilities and financial planning, set Sept. 23 for the annual tax-rate hearing and approved Summit Seven Creative as the new publisher of Bulldog News, among other action items.

Get a Clean Car and Help Support KSD Students & Families!

Club Car Wash of Kearney is helping our community kick off the school year with a simple way to support Kearney School District students and families!

From Aug. 28-30, Club Car Wash is offering its MVP Wash for just $5, with $1 from each qualifying wash going to support KSD through our Resource Fund.

The KSD Resource Fund helps us provide resources and assistance directly to students and families who need them, including support for efforts such as our annual KSD Resource Fair. Money raised through this promotion is dedicated to that work.

There’s another way to celebrate our schools, too: Club Car Wash is inviting customers to nominate a favorite teacher for a chance to win a $5,000 gift card!

So, if your vehicle could use a back-to-school cleanup, Aug. 28-30 is a great time to get it done while helping KSD care for students and families across our community. See the attached flyer for promotion details and information about nominating a teacher.

Keeping Our Bulldogs Safe: Resources for KSD Families

Creating safe, welcoming and supportive schools is one of our most important responsibilities at Kearney School District, and it is work that takes place every day across our campuses.

Our approach includes strong partnerships with local law enforcement and first responders, trained school safety personnel, emergency planning and drills, threat assessment procedures, visitor management systems and ongoing work to help students and staff know how to respond when concerns arise. Families are important partners in that work, and we want to make sure you know about the resources available to you.

Important Reminder Regarding E-Bikes & Motorized Scooters

We’re looking forward to welcoming our students and community back for the start of school and another great season of Bulldog football and other activities! This is a good opportunity to share an important safety reminder about electric bikes, motor scooters and similar motorized devices on Kearney School District property.

Students are welcome to use appropriate transportation to get to the event, but e-bikes, motorized scooters and similar devices should be parked once students arrive on campus. They should not be ridden around the KHS campus or athletic facilities during after-school activities.

SFE Shares Summer Food Service Highlights

Our partners with Southwest Foodservice Excellence stayed busy this summer serving Kearney School District students and creating some memorable experiences along the way.

SFE General Manager Angie Lyman and her team have put together a summer newsletter highlighting their work, including summer meal service, a hands-on Roving Chef activity with Kids Club students and some of the small moments that helped make mealtime fun.

We’re grateful for the outstanding food service professionals who take such good care of our Bulldogs throughout the year. Take a few minutes to check out SFE’s Summer 2026 newsletter!

KSD Teachers Focus on Small, Doable Practices That Have A Big Impact for Students

Kearney School District teachers spent part of their day today learning, collaborating and sharpening their instructional practices with Dr. Michael McDowell, co-founder of Hinge Education.

Our secondary teachers worked with Dr. McDowell on Tuesday, Aug. 18, at the Annunciation Community Center, followed by our elementary teachers in the afternoon. The professional development was organized and hosted by our Department of Academic Services, led by Assistant Superintendent for Academic Services Dr. Valerie Utecht, and was designed to enhance and support our districtwide focus on Authentic Literacy.

One of Dr. McDowell's central messages was powerful in its simplicity: Focus on "small, doable practices" that research shows can have a significant impact on student learning.

Throughout the sessions, teachers explored ways to build greater clarity and engagement into their classrooms while putting students in the driver's seat of their own learning. Dr. McDowell compared great teaching to great coaching or performing arts directing. The teacher provides the preparation, guidance, feedback and support, but ultimately, the students are the ones playing the game and taking the stage.

That means designing lessons in which students are reading, writing, thinking, talking, questioning, problem-solving and doing the intellectual work that leads to deeper learning.

Dr. McDowell brings more than 18 years of experience in public education as a classroom teacher, coach, principal, district administrator and superintendent, along with extensive work supporting educators and school systems across the country.

We are grateful to Dr. McDowell and to our Academic Services team for providing our teachers with practical strategies they can carry directly into their classrooms as we prepare to welcome students back for another great year in KSD.
