TITLE TOWN: KHS Girls Wrestling Wins 4th Straight State Championship!

Kearney High School is Title Town once again.

On Thursday, Feb. 26, inside Mizzou Arena in Columbia, the KHS Girls Wrestling program delivered another unforgettable finish at the 2026 MSHSAA Wrestling Championships, bringing home the Class 1 team state championship for the FOURTH year in a row.

The Bulldogs didn’t just win. It was dominant. Kearney scored 130.5 team points, finishing nearly 20 points clear of second-place Ste. Genevieve to secure the crown.

That makes it four consecutive Class 1 state titles (2023–2026), a run that has firmly established this team as one of the premier programs in Missouri.

Please help us congratulate our six Bulldogs who battled their way onto the podium (a program record!):
  • Zolah Williams (105) — State Champion
  • Myla Woolridge (110) — State Runner-Up
  • Riley Walker (115) — 5th Place
  • Aida Appenfeller (140) — 5th Place
  • Bella Wenzel (145) — 4th Place
  • Carli Vargas (190) — State Champion
Head Coach Nick Ward summed it up best. "The Bulldogs came out hot and never cooled off,” he said. "In the biggest rounds, they delivered the bonus points and clutch moments that separate champions from everyone else."

And just as important as the hardware: all eight state qualifiers represented Kearney with the kind of class, toughness and team-first confidence that makes our community proud!

Coach Ward's staff includes Varsity Assistant Coaches Cami Aebersold, Lexie Cole, Caleb Grant Dixon, Eric Marshall and Brett Williams.

Support KHS Theatre During Free Performance on March 12

Kearney High School Theatre is getting ready for MSHSAA Theatre Districts, and they’d love a big Bulldog crowd in the seats as they put the finishing touches on two wonderful performances.

On Thursday, March 12, at 7 p.m., the KHS Theatre Department will host a public performance featuring:
  • 🎭 Reader’s Theatre: Happy Birthday
  • 🎭 One Act: Anne of Green Gables
There’s no ticket charge, but the Theatre Parent Group will be accepting donations to support our students and the program. Each performance runs about 30 minutes, so it’s an easy, family-friendly evening out.

As Theatre Director Haley Kernes shared, “Please come out and support the Theatre Department in their preparation for Theatre Districts! They cannot wait to share their hard work with all of you!”

Let’s show up and encourage these students as they head into competition! We’ll see you on March 12!

Bulldog Singers Reach High Notes at Large Group Contest

Kearney High School choir members proved once again that they're pitch perfect! Our KHS choirs traveled to Liberty High School on Tuesday, March 3, for the MSHSAA District 17 Large Group Vocal Festival, and every single Bulldog ensemble earned an Exemplary rating, the highest possible.

Congratulations to:
  • Chamber Choir
  • Frequency
  • Bel Canto
  • Chorale
  • Tenor-Bass Choir
If you’ve never seen how this competition works, it’s a true test of musicianship. Ensembles perform two prepared selections and then step into a sight-reading room where they’re handed brand-new music and asked to bring it to life on the spot. The KHS performers didn’t just shine on the prepared pieces; our students also earned Exemplary ratings in sight-reading across the board.

KHS Choir Director Dustin McKinney summed it up perfectly. “ALL of the choirs from Kearney performed beautifully, receiving top ratings on the day," he said. "To make the day even sweeter, the students also received Exemplary ratings in the sight-reading room. It was a great day to be a bulldog!”

This kind of success takes talent, preparation, teamwork and a whole lot of heart. We’re proud of our students and grateful for the support from families and our community that helps fine arts thrive in Kearney School District. Congratulations, Bulldogs! 💜💛

KHS Science Olympiad Finds the Right Formula at Regionals

A big congratulations to our Kearney High School Science Olympiad team for a strong showing at the Regional Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 28, at William Jewell College.

While the Bulldogs didn’t advance to state this year, there’s a detail that says a lot about this group: every student on the team earned at least one event placement. That takes preparation, teamwork and the kind of persistence that matters just as much as the final standings.

Please join us in recognizing these individual event results:
  • Anatomy & Physiology – 4th Place: Olivia Mormino
  • Astronomy – 5th Place: Carleigh Jameson & Luke Zurliene
  • Forensics – 6th Place: Carleigh Jameson & Myka Sitton
  • Helicopter – 5th Place: Carter Walker & Luke Zurliene
  • Materials Science – 5th Place: Emelyn Kane & Myka Sitton
Way to represent Kearney School District, Bulldogs! Excellent work, and congratulations on a job well done!

KHS Golden Girls Shine at State

Kearney High School’s Golden Girls wrapped up their season in a big way at the 2026 Missouri Dance Team Association State Championship, held Feb. 27–28 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

Solos competed on Friday, and Ainsley Daniels earned a 10th-place finish in the junior division. On Saturday, the Golden Girls followed with two strong team performances and came home with outstanding results:
  • Pom: 1st Place
  • Jazz: 3rd Place
  • Overall: 3rd Place
In addition to their success on the floor, several Golden Girls were recognized for their excellence in the classroom with Academic All-State honors for their GPA:

  • Jacee Hensley
  • Lilyan Kagarice
  • Analeigh Miles
  • Rikki O’Connor

The team and coaches shared their appreciation for the support they’ve received from our school and community all season long. Congratulations to our Golden Girls on an incredible postseason finish, and thank you for representing Kearney School District with such dedication, work ethic and Bulldog pride!

Thank you, KSD Social Workers!

A split image features three smiling women: Meeghan Masters, Amanda Textor, and Erin Thomasma.
March 1–7 is School Social Work Week, and Kearney School District is proud to recognize the steady, behind-the-scenes work that helps so many of our students (and families) keep moving forward. Please join us in thanking our KSD social workers: Meeghan Masters, Amanda Textor, and Erin Thomasma.

This year’s national theme, Unite to Ignite: Celebrating Our Impact, fits KSD perfectly, because school social work is all about connecting people and supports so students can thrive.

School social workers support students’ academic, social and emotional well-being through compassionate guidance, collaboration with families and staff, and a strong commitment to helping every student succeed.

They also help connect families with resources, support student mental health and behavior, provide early intervention, and assist during times of crisis. They do this work with students’ best interests at the center.

We’re grateful for the professionalism, compassion and extraordinary support our social workers bring to KSD! Thank you for all you do for our Bulldogs. 🐾💜💛
