Dr. Matt Miller, Incoming Superintendent

The Kearney School District Board of Education has selected Dr. Matthew Miller as the next superintendent of schools. Dr. Miller is currently serving as superintendent for the Moberly School District. His extensive career in education displays his dedication to students and the communities he has served.

Board President Mark Kelly stated, “The board was impressed with Dr. Miller’s experience as a superintendent, his leadership and the innovation he has provided the Moberly School District.”

The board chose Dr. Miller after partnering with EdCounsel to conduct a national search. Dr. Miller’s expertise in strategic planning, program development and community relations make him an ideal candidate for the Kearney School District.

Dr. Miller began in education as a classroom teacher in the North Kansas City School District. He furthered his career in North Kansas City as the curriculum project specialist and curriculum development coordinator. His career in administration started when he became a principal in the Raytown School District.  He continued his leadership role with the Lee’s Summit School District, first as a principal and then as executive director of student services. In 2016, Dr. Miller accepted his current role as the superintendent in Moberly.

“I am impressed by the district’s strong tradition of excellence and the innovative culture,” Dr. Miller stated. “I look forward to getting to know the students, parents, staff, and people in the community and continuing the important work together.”

Dr. Miller attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, a Master of Education in Educational Administration and an Educational Specialist degree. He furthered his education with Baker University as he earned his Doctorate in Educational Administration. In 2018, he was named New Superintendent of the Year by the Northeast Missouri Association of School Administrators (NEMASA).

He and his wife, Joanna, and their daughter plan to relocate to Kearney this summer.

Dr. Miller will assume his duties as superintendent effective July 1, 2020. Current Superintendent Dr. Bill Nicely announced he will retire at the end of the 2019-2020 school year after serving the Kearney community for 11 years.

Mark Kelly, school board president, specifically thanked Dr. Nicely for “the many years of dedicated service and exemplary leadership to the Kearney School District.”
